How Employees can Benefit from Office Greenery...

Updated: Feb 20, 2020

Office greenery is becoming a huge trend within the interior design world and ZSpace explored the possible benefits indoor plants could bring to your workplace.

It is said that humans have an innate desire to be connected with nature in which scientists call ‘biophillia’. Don’t worry we won’t bore you with the ins and outs of this. However, unfortunately we tend to spend most of our day within an office or in doors which are commonly stripped of a connection to the natural environment.

Studies have found that simply adding greenery to the workplace can have major positive benefits to employees and their organisations. The same applies to home workers too. So, here is why you should invest in some greenery for your office desk or wider workplace:

1. REDUCED TOXINS

Common toxins found in the workplace such as dust can have a negative impact on employee health.

A study by Washington State University found that adding plants to your space can reduce dust by up to 20%. This is partly down to large surface plants which act as a filter to clean the air. impact on employee health.

Plants do this by either trapping toxins within their own tissue or releasing them as harmless bi-products.

Plants really are the earth’s natural air purifier.

For you, this is great. It improves employee health and therefore decreases absences!

2. IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY

According to Dr Chris Knight from Exeter University, who has been studying this issue for over 10 years found that employees were 15% more productive when ‘lean’ workplaces are filled with just a few indoor plants.

Colourful plants can also liven an office to create a calmer working environment which is also welcoming and enjoyable for visitors and clients to the workplace.

3. SMARTER THINKING

Recent research is beginning to show that adding plants to your work space

can improve your cognitive behavior.

A study by the Journal of Environmental Psychology shows that the presence of plants in an office setting boosts one’s ability to maintain their attention and therefore increasing productivity and overall thinking- interesting!

In a nutshell, Biophillia is about bringing the proven positives of being outdoors and being connected to nature into the work space. It is clear this new concept isn’t going anywhere and will only progress as time goes on.
